Tell your elected officials: Stop plastic from choking our oceans

Plastic pollution is a growing threat to our oceans and the diverse animals that live there. Oceana found nearly 1,800 marine mammals and sea turtles had swallowed or become entangled in plastic in U.S. waters since 2009. Of these animals, 88% were from species listed as endangered or threatened with extinction under the Endangered Species Act.

While cities and states have started taking action to regulate single-use plastic, more needs to be done.

Tell your elected officials to protect our oceans and marine life from plastic pollution before it’s too late.

Petition Text

As your constituent, I am asking you to support strong polices that reduce the production and use of unnecessary single-use plastic.

An estimated 15 million metric tons of plastic enter the marine environment every year. This is roughly equivalent to dumping two garbage trucks full of plastic into the oceans every minute.

Dolphins, sea turtles and other marine animals — many of which are listed as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act — are swallowing or becoming entangled in the plastic pollution flooding our oceans.

This persistent pollutant has been found floating on the surface of the ocean, washing up on the world’s most remote coastlines, melting out of Arctic sea ice and sitting at the deepest point of the ocean floor.

Enough is enough. I want to a future where we’re not eating, drinking and breathing plastic; where threatened and endangered marine life isn’t choking and dying on plastic; and where we can enjoy our greatest resource without shuffling or swimming through plastic waste. Please support policies that reduce the production and use of single-use plastic threatening our planet. This problem will only get worse with inaction.
