TELL THE GOVERNMENT WE NEED A STRONGER PLASTIC BAN
URGENT: We only have until March 4, 2022, to have our say on Canada’s proposed single-use plastic ban. Add your voice, before it’s too late.
The draft regulations for the plastic ban do not go far enough, fast enough, and contain too many loopholes. There’s no time to waste when it comes to eliminating plastic waste.
At the end of 2021, the Canadian government released its draft regulations for the long-anticipated single-use plastic ban. The proposed ban is a huge opportunity for Canada and the world to fix this massive environmental disaster that affects us all. But it has some glaring omissions.
As currently proposed, the ban has loopholes that allow industry to create more harmful single-use plastics, allow for the manufacture and export of the plastic items on the ban list - and it will take another two years for the ban to come into effect. By waiting until 2024, as many as 31 billion plastic bags, 11.6 billion straws and 1.6 billion take-out containers could be thrown away or end up in our environment.
The government has asked for public comment on the draft regulations from now until March 4, 2022. Let’s fix this now, while there’s still time.
