Offshore drilling is fueling our ever-worsening climate crisis and threatens the lives and livelihoods of millions of Americans who rely on a clean, healthy ocean.
Time and time again when we are faced with human-caused disasters, like the oil spill off the coast of California, we are told by those responsible that oil spills are rare occurrences. This spill was a tragic confirmation of what we know far too well – offshore drilling is dirty and dangerous, and when they drill, they spill. No operator can guarantee there won’t be a disaster.
The oil currently washing onto our beaches is the unfortunate yet inevitable result of offshore drilling. A major spill of toxic oil – much of which remains in the ocean and will never be removed – is choking the life out of our ocean as we speak. From exploration, to drilling, to extraction, to transportation, offshore drilling threatens disaster at every stage. In fact, between 2007 and 2018, there were over 7,000 oil spills in federal waters, an average of about two every day.
We cannot afford to wait.
Now is our chance to permanently protect our oceans and coasts from new dirty and dangerous offshore drilling once and for all.
Tell Congress and President Biden: Act on climate change, stop selling off our oceans to the highest bidder, and permanently end new offshore drilling.
