Seafood should not come at the cost of human rights or healthy oceans. Across the globe, illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing depletes fish populations, destroys essential habitats, and can be a driver of forced labor and human rights abuses. IUU fishing is off the books and outside the rule of law, compromising responsible and effective fisheries management, and undermining American fishers who play by the rules.
It’s time for the United States to get tough on illegal fishing. In 2019, the U.S. imported an estimated $2.4 billion worth of seafood imports derived from IUU fishing. But right now, we have an opportunity to make a difference.
The Illegal Fishing and Forced Labor Prevention Act would help us fight illegal fishing abroad, defend honest American fishers, know more about the seafood we purchase, and protect our oceans and at-risk marine life from destruction.
Tell your U.S. Representative: End illegal fishing, prevent forced labor, and protect the health and abundance of our oceans, before it’s too late.
