TELL THE GOVERNMENT TO END THE PLASTIC DISASTER
The Canadian government committed to ban single-use plastics by 2021 but its plan to do so falls short. Our oceans are in crisis and there is no time to waste. It’s time to #EndThePlasticDisaster and we need your help.
There’s no denying it: Plastic pollution is killing whales, dolphins, sea turtles and seabirds.
The government is taking steps to turn the tide on plastic pollution, but it’s only planning to ban six single-use plastic items: plastic bags, stir sticks, six-pack rings, straws, cutlery and takeout containers made from plastics that are hard to recycle.
Canada’s Environment Minister stated in the media that these six items are only a “fraction of one per cent” of the plastic products we use. This is a drop in the bucket for an ocean drowning in plastic pollution. The ban won’t make a dent in the 3.3 million tonnes of plastic that is thrown away in Canada every year – a whopping 47 per cent of which is packaging.
