Bottom trawling drags heavy nets, often the size of football pitches, across the seabed - decimating habitats and indiscriminately snatching up marine life. It's no surprise that 8 out of 10 adults support a ban on bottom trawling in UK Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).
It's not just life on the seafloor that suffers; iconic wildlife such as harbour porpoises and puffins are being entangled in bottom trawl gear, their habitats destroyed and the fish they rely on for food decimated.
Bottom trawling currently impacts an estimated 90% of UK marine protected areas.
As your constituent, I urge you to take action to defend our British marine wildlife. Please write to the Environment Secretary asking for action to:
- ban bottom trawling in the 41 MPAs consulted on last June, and
- protect seabird and harbour porpoise MPAs from this destructive fishing.
Marine protected areas should offer real protection for our wildlife. Please use your voice to help ensure they do.
