Protect Massachusetts from Plastic Pollution
Roughly 33 billion pounds of plastic enter the oceans every year. Scientists have found plastic everywhere from the deepest part of the seas to the highest mountains, and even in our own bodies.
Polystyrene plastic, which is often used for cups, plates, and food containers as well as packaging material, is one of the most common plastics found polluting our beaches and coasts. A common type of polystyrene, plastic foam, easily breaks up into tiny pieces that can be carried far and wide by wind and water, making it extremely difficult to clean up. Sea turtles, seabirds, and other ocean wildlife can mistake this plastic for food.
Twelve other states and over 60 cities and towns in Massachusetts have passed policies to reduce polystyrene. Yet, the Massachusetts legislature has not acted.
Tell your state legislators to protect our oceans and health from harmful plastic pollution by phasing out polystyrene plastic in Massachusetts.
