I express my strong support for the call from fisher associations to ensure democratic representation of fishers on the Fisheries Council.

Fishers are the backbone of Belize’s blue economy, and their livelihoods depend on the Council’s decisions. To ensure fairness and transparency, fishers should elect their representatives, rather than have them appointed.

We urge the Ministry of Blue Economy and Marine Conservation to review the current mechanism under the Fisheries Resources Act (2020) to reflect the voices of those most affected. This reform would strengthen accountability, align Belize with international best practices, and secure the long-term resilience of our coastal communities.

We stand united in calling for a Fisheries Council that truly represents Belize’s fishers.
