The Trump administration is greenlighting the destruction of our oceans, and we need your help to stop it.

Last year, President Trump issued an executive order fast-tracking approvals for deep-sea mining. Since then, the administration has kicked off the process in multiple areas around the United States and in international waters. Mining the ocean floor can cause irreparable damage to delicate and important ecosystems, which are vital to fisheries, economies, and communities around the world.

Urge your representatives in Congress to step in to prevent this reckless effort to fast-track deep-sea mining, which could cause long-lasting harm to our oceans.

As your constituent, I’m calling on you to support legislation to prevent the fast-tracking of deep-sea mining, which could have long-lasting harmful effects on our oceans. Healthy oceans support livelihoods, communities, and economies, but mining our oceans would put all of that at risk.

The waters of the deep sea are still, clear, and quiet. They are home to important habitats including deep water corals and support food webs necessary for healthy marine mammals, fish, and other sea creatures. In addition to directly destroying marine life and releasing toxic and radioactive materials, deep-sea mining will produce noise and harmful sediment plumes that will destabilize and smother highly sensitive animals and disrupt habitat for commercially important fish species.

Please cosponsor the American Seabed Protection Act (H.R. 664) and the International Seabed Protection Act (H.R. 663). H.R. 664 would put all U.S. approvals for seabed mining in U.S. waters or internationally on hold and would also require a comprehensive study of the environmental impacts of deep-sea mining. H.R. 663 would instruct the U.S. government to oppose seabed mining unless there is a scientific consensus in support, and international regulations are adopted by the International Seabed Authority in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Please defend our oceans from dangerous mining before it is too late. We know that our oceans thrive when they are well protected, but deep-sea mining puts our oceans, marine life, and all those who rely on them at risk. I urge you to stand up for our oceans.
