Big Oil is leaking hundreds of tonnes of oil into UK seas each year.

Oceana’s new report reveals that oil companies are routinely breaching their permit conditions when discharging toxic, oily water into the sea. This is on top of accidental spills.

Big Oil must not reign free in our seas. Government must take control and increase regulation and enforcement of an industry with a long history of environmental harm.

Dear Ed Miliband,

I was shocked to see the scale and impact of chronic oil pollution in UK seas from oil and gas infrastructure, revealed in Oceana’s new report, Sea Slick (available here: uk.oceana.org/reports/sea-slick/). I am writing to highlight the opportunity for the new government to change the approach to start properly holding the oil companies responsible to account.

The government and regulators must do more to ensure the UK’s precious marine wildlife is protected throughout the transition away from this polluting industry.  I support Oceana’s recommendation to see a significant ramp up of investigations and inspections of oil and gas operations and meaningful fines imposed for spills and breaches of discharge permits. This could raise more crucial funds to support a clean and green energy transition.

I am also very supportive of your commitment to end new licences of oil and gas, and I urge you enshrine it in legislation and across wider government policy as soon as possible.

Please, take the opportunity now to implement changes to ensure UK seas and the communities that rely on a thriving ocean are better protected from oil and gas industry pollution.
