Stop The Use Of Swordfish Drift Gillnets

You have a chance to save endangered species from dying in drift gillnets. Legislation in the U.S. Senate and House would require the California swordfish drift gillnet fishery to phase out the use of drift gillnets and facilitate the switch to cleaner gear types.

Mile-long drift gillnets snare, injure and kill large migratory ocean animals, including bottlenose dolphins, endangered fin whales and leatherback sea turtles. Buoy gear is proven to reduce bycatch while still effectively targeting swordfish off the West Coast.

California recently passed legislation that will phase out the use of drift gillnets in state waters. Now, we need to act fast and ensure this bill is passed to keep gillnets from simply moving out of state waters and into federal.

Tell your members of Congress to support legislation to end the use of drift gillnets in waters off California and protect at-risk species from being killed.
