PROTECT PANAON ISLAND CORAL REEFS!

It may be in near pristine condition, but Panaon Island’s coral reefs are threatened likewise by plastic pollution, illegal fishing activities, and the increasing number of crown-of-thorns starfish.

We have to act fast to save the remaining good and excellent coral reefs of Panaon Island. It lies directly on the pathway of storms and extreme weather systems that render the coastal communities at high risk to climate change. The damage and losses in lives and properties from super typhoon Odette last year is not one that can be easily forgotten.

Enhanced law enforcement and stronger safeguards need also to be in place to stop these destructive threats and make our reefs resilient from impacts of climate change. That's why we're calling on the members of the House of Representatives and the Senate to pass the bill declaring the waters of Panaon Island, Southern Leyte as a protected seascape.

We appeal to the members of the House of Representatives and the Senate to pass the bill declaring the waters of Panaon Island, Southern Leyte as a protected seascape.

This declaration is an important step to enhance the resilience of the island, considering that it has reefs with more than 40% coral cover – a breakthrough amidst reports of continued decline of coral reefs in the Philippines.

Coral reef protection is at the heart of our habitat conservation and protection efforts. To restore our country’s vibrant and abundant marine resources, we need healthy coral reefs that will support marine life and allow these to thrive. The immense benefits of fish abundance, marine biodiversity, and resilient ecosystem to people of present and future generations are immeasurable.

Once declared a marine protected area under the Expanded National Integrated Protected Areas System (ENIPAS) Act, Panaon Island will enjoy the added layer of protection and the effective conservation as a protected seascape: strong governance and active citizens participation in the programs will be enhanced and local governments will be given more access to national government’s resources including livelihood opportunities.
