As your constituent, I’m asking you to support the Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act. The oceans face a massive and growing threat from plastic pollution, and the United States is the biggest contributor of plastic waste in the world. An estimated 33 billion pounds of plastic enter the marine environment every year. This is roughly equivalent to dumping two garbage trucks full of plastic into the oceans every minute.

Plastic has been found floating on the surface of the ocean, washing up on the world’s most remote coastlines, melting out of Arctic sea ice, and sitting at the deepest point of the ocean floor. As plastic floods the seas, it impacts everything from fish and sea turtles to whales, dolphins, and seabirds.

Plastic pollution also harms our climate, health, and communities. From extraction to incineration, the process of producing and disposing of plastic contributes to climate change and pollutes the air, land, and water.

The Break Free from Plastic Pollution Act will effectively address the plastic pollution crisis. The bill builds on successful state and local policies and would put in place a set of laws to reduce plastic pollution at the source, including phasing out unnecessary single-use plastic products, encouraging a shift to refillable and reusable alternatives, and protecting fenceline communities living near plastic production facilities.
