TELL CONGRESS: PROTECT OUR COASTS AND PREVENT NEW DRILLING

President Biden broke his promise to the American people in September when he issued new offshore drilling leases on federal waters. Despite vowing to end oil and gas drilling on federal waters while campaigning for president, the Biden administration has now offered three new leases for dirty and dangerous offshore drilling.

This decision is a major missed opportunity to help curb the climate crisis, because we know when companies drill, they spill. This puts our communities and our oceans at serious risk. Ending new offshore drilling on federal waters could have prevented over 19 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions, which would have been the equivalent of taking every car in the nation off the road for 15 years.

If the president won’t keep his promise, then our legislators must make him. There’s simply too much at stake. Congress must reject President Biden’s Five-Year Plan during the review process and prevent any new legislation that exacerbates the climate crisis by increasing offshore drilling. The time to act is now. Urge your representative and senators to reject President Biden’s Five-Year Plan for oil and gas and add your voice to the growing list of people who are working tirelessly to protect our coasts.

I’m writing to express my objection to the recently released final Five-Year Plan for offshore drilling.

In 2020, President Biden promised to stop new leasing in federal waters to the oil and gas industry. But his final proposal includes three lease sales in the Gulf of Mexico between 2025 and 2029. It’s clear that oil and gas development is driving the climate crisis. The abnormal weather experienced over this past summer is but a glimpse into a future that plainly proves offshore drilling should not be expanded. The oil industry is currently raking in record profits while sitting on eight million acres of unused leases—acres that they will still be free to drill on had a final plan included no new lease sales. The industry’s demand for more leasing is not about energy security or being part of a transition to a clean energy future. It is simply about self-preservation and profit.

During the 60-day congressional review period now underway, members of Congress can comment on the plan and persuade President Biden to implement a final version with no new lease sales. I ask you to reach out to the President and urge him to prevent any new leasing in federal waters, and I urge you to reject any attempts by members of Congress to mandate new leasing through legislation. It’s time to end our dependence on fossil fuels if we’re to meet the challenge of the climate crisis.
