URGE WORLD LEADERS TO TACKLE THE CLIMATE CRISIS
The climate crisis is here, now, and it’s affecting all of us through more frequent and intense wildfires, hurricanes, floods, droughts, and heat waves.
It’s also wreaking havoc on our oceans – sea levels are rising at alarming rates, our oceans are becoming more acidic, and global ocean temperatures are setting record highs with no sign of cooling down.
Thankfully, the climate crisis is something we know how to combat, and our oceans can be a key player in this battle.
According to a new report commissioned by the High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy, ocean-based solutions can deliver nearly half of the emissions reductions needed to prevent climate catastrophe.
But to fully harness the ocean’s potential, it will require action from governments around the world.
Join Oceana in urging world leaders to take immediate action to tackle the climate crisis. There’s no time to wait!
petition letter
Dear World Leaders,
Climate change is here, affecting all of us through more frequent and intense wildfires, hurricanes, floods, droughts, and heat waves, and it’s only going to get worse unless you take urgent action now.
While our oceans have helped protect us from the worst impacts of climate change – absorbing over 90% of the excess heat created by human activity – there’s a limit to how much they can withstand. Sea levels are rising at alarming rates and global ocean temperatures are setting record highs, with no sign of cooling down.
We know the oceans can play an outsized role in helping to tackle the climate crisis. A new report commissioned by the High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy finds that ocean-based solutions can deliver up to 47% of the annual greenhouse gas emissions reductions needed by 2050 to keep the planet from warming a catastrophic 2 degrees Celsius.
By stopping the expansion of offshore drilling, protecting marine habitats, safeguarding climate-friendly seafood, improving shipping efficiency, replacing fossil fuel power with renewable sources, decarbonizing ocean-based tourism, and improving catch efficiency and fuel use in fishing, we can harness the ocean’s potential to secure a more sustainable and resilient future – but only if leaders like you work together to implement these solutions now.
We’re counting on you to take immediate action to tackle the climate crisis to protect our future, and our planet’s future. The time to act is now.
Sincerely,
