Plastic pollution threatens ocean wildlife. Along US coasts, Oceana found nearly 1,800 sea turtles and marine mammals had swallowed or were entangled in plastic between 2009-2020. Nearly 90% of these animals were endangered or threatened species.

Thankfully, in June, the Massachusetts Senate passed S. 2833, a bill that would ban carryout plastic bags at retail stores statewide, make straws and plastic utensils available by request only, and reduce other single-use plastics. Now the bill moves to the Massachusetts House where it needs to pass before the end of July.

As your constituent, I’m asking you to support S. 2833, An Act to Reduce Plastics, to address the plastic pollution crisis in Massachusetts.

Plastic pollution is a growing threat to marine ecosystems and communities that depend on healthy coastlines. Here in Massachusetts, our clean coast economy is vital--valued at roughly $10.3 billion and supporting approximately 124,000 jobs. All of that is put at risk by the staggering amount of plastic flooding our seas. Every minute, the equivalent of two garbage trucks full of plastic enters the oceans around the world.

Global production of plastic is projected to triple by 2050. As plastic production increases so will the amount of plastic polluting the ocean and our communities. It is critical that we work to curb the plastic pollution crisis. I urge you to support S. 2833, An Act to Reduce Plastics.

S. 2833 would ban carryout plastic bags at retail stores statewide, prohibit single-use plastic bottle purchases by state agencies, make straws and plastic utensils available by request only, prohibit unrecyclable black plastic foodware, and require the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection to study and make recommendations on banning foam and solid polystyrene in the Commonwealth, in addition to other provisions.

The most effective way to prevent single-use plastic pollution from ending up on our beaches and harming marine life is to reduce its production and use. There is widespread support for policies that do that. In fact, in a statewide poll released by Oceana, 89% of Massachusetts voters said they support local and state policies that reduce single-use plastic.

Please help address this plastic crisis and protect Massachusetts’ coast, waterways, and communities from plastic pollution by passing S. 2833 through the Massachusetts House of Representatives.
