This month marks the 34th anniversary of the Exxon Valdez oil spill. This disaster spilled almost 11 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Alaska - fouling 1,300 miles of beaches and shoreline, killing 2,800 sea otters and more than 250,000 seabirds, and devastating local economic drivers beyond repair.
And it doesn’t stop there. In 2010, Deepwater Horizon became the 14th major spill into U.S. marine waters following Exxon Valdez in 1989. We were then reminded of the dangers of offshore drilling as millions of gallons of oil ravaged the Gulf of Mexico. The spill resulted in killing up to 800,000 birds, 170,000 sea turtles, and at least 150 dolphins and whales – many of which were endangered.
We need to make sure this doesn't happen again.
When you become an Oceana member, you are supporting efforts to stop offshore drilling from polluting our oceans and killing marine animals. Because we know that when they drill, they spill. But it doesn't have to be this way.
And with your donation of $55 or more, you'll receive a pair of our exclusive Oceana-branded joggers! This offer expires on April 1st, so be sure to get your joggers while they last.
With you by our side, we will continue the fight to protect our coasts from dirty and dangerous offshore drilling for generations to come.
The oceans need you. Donate to become an Oceana member today!
