Tell President Biden: End New Offshore Oil Drilling

Offshore drilling is fueling our ever-worsening climate crisis and threatens the lives and livelihoods of millions of Americans who rely on a clean, healthy ocean. Case in point: the oil spill off the coast of California. This spill was a tragic confirmation of what we know far too well – offshore drilling is dirty and dangerous, and when they drill, they spill. No operator can guarantee there won’t be a disaster.

Now is our chance to permanently protect our oceans and coasts from new dirty and dangerous offshore drilling once and for all.

Tell President Biden: Act on climate change, stop selling off our oceans to the highest bidder, and permanently end new offshore drilling. Please feel free to edit the petition text below, then fill out your info on the right to submit your letter.

Petition Text

Dear President Biden:

The upcoming release of the five-year plan for offshore oil and gas drilling is your opportunity to end new leasing for offshore drilling and move us toward permanently protecting our oceans and coasts. Ending new leasing for offshore drilling is a vital step in tackling the climate crisis and protecting millions of jobs that rely on a healthy ocean.

With sea levels rising and devastating extreme weather accelerating, it is crucial that we end new leasing for dirty and dangerous offshore oil drilling. Ending new leasing for fossil fuels is necessary to meet the administration’s goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030. New lease sales would lock in production for decades, resulting in hundreds of millions of metric tons of CO2 emissions that are driving climate change. Offshore drilling also has significant impacts on the communities where production occurs and the marine environment while undermining the ability of the ocean to adapt to a changing climate.

Releasing a five-year plan with no new leases will be crucial for preserving our clean coast economy and addressing the climate crisis. If made permanent, the policy could prevent over 19 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions and more than $720 billion in damages to people, property, and the environment. Our economy and our families cannot afford more drilling and its associated climate pollution.

And the benefits do not stop there. Permanently protecting our coasts from new drilling would protect the roughly 3.3 million American jobs and $250 billion in GDP reliant on industries like tourism, recreation, and fishing. Ending new leasing for offshore drilling would help protect our coasts from devastating oil spills and the devastation of climate change. Transitioning away from dirty fossil fuels and towards clean, renewable energy sources like offshore wind can also pave the way for good-paying American jobs that will power our nation into the future.

Mr. President: We are counting on you to end new offshore drilling. Now is the time to act and permanently protect our climate, ocean, and coastal economies from dirty and dangerous offshore drilling. We’re counting on your leadership to protect our coastal communities and take strong action on climate change. The time for action is now.

Sincerely,
