TELL THE GOVERNMENT TO CLOSE THE CAPELIN FISHERY
BREAKING: Capelin are critically depleted and being actively overfished. Fisheries and Oceans Canada must close the capelin fishery immediately.
Capelin are a small schooling fish found off the coast of northeast Newfoundland. These tiny fish are a critical part of the food chain and support many species such as humpback whales, cod and puffins.
Despite being essential to the health of the ecosystem and coastal communities, capelin are being overfished. The fishery targets the eggs of female capelin, meaning that not only are adults removed from the population, but the next generation is lost too.
These important fish are in a dire state with a poor outlook for their future unless urgent action is taken. Fisheries and Oceans Canada needs to know that this issue matters to you.
Sign the petition to contact the government and tell them you want the capelin fishery closed immediately.
