Protect loggerhead sea turtle habitat
09/16/13 Petition closed. We delivered over 36,600 signatures to the National Marine Fisheries Service!
Loggerhead sea turtles have been listed under the Endangered Species Act for more than three decades, but the government has only now taken steps to protect ocean habitats essential to their recovery and survival. However, the government's proposal just isn't enough.
The U.S. government has only proposed to protect areas within one mile of shore even though female sea turtles spend the majority of their time outside of this zone between trips to the beach to nest. In addition, the proposal leaves many of their feeding grounds and the entire Pacific Ocean unprotected.
Loggerhead sea turtles face serious threats from fishing gear, plastic pollution and beach erosion. Protecting key habitat will help these beautiful creatures recover and be more resilient to future threats.
Sign by September 13 to tell the National Marine Fisheries Service to protect loggerhead habitat.
